How Much News Did Salmonella Make In June 2008

For several months Salmonella has been on the news, but what is it?

Seafood-Norway calls it "A microorganism causing food poisoning in humans, salmonella is very common and is found on meat, poultry and rarely, seafood. ..."

Spike-Jamie says its "One of several types of bacteria which can cause food poisoning (Salmonellosis) if ingested in large numbers. It is found in the intestinal tract of animals, birds, insects, reptiles, seafood, and people. The bacteria can easily be passed from the intestinal tract to the hands and onto food."

Medterms calls it "Salmonella is widespread in the intestines of birds, reptiles and mammals. People can acquire the bacteria via a variety of different foods of animal origin. The illness it causes is called salmonellosis and typically includes fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. ..."

The FDA says tomatoes grown in central and southern Florida and parts of Mexico are among the leading suspects in the salmonella outbreak. But Fla. officials says they're fairly confident Fla. tomatoes are not the source. See Video

June 19 : New salmonella cases put tomato toll near 400

Federal health officials have learned of 106 more cases of salmonella linked to tainted tomatoes, putting the outbreak's toll at 383 on Wednesday and counting. At least 48 people have been hospitalized. See Video

Tomato farmers are struggling in the wake of a salmonella scare that has made more than a thousand people sick. The feds are now looking at the possibility that peppers and cilantro may be to blame, but tomato farmers say the damage is done.

So far more than 1,000 people have become ill from salmonella first linked to raw tomatoes. Adding to the confusion, the government is warning certain people to avoid types of hot peppers, too. See Video
